🔬 Scientific Name: Dracaena trifasciata (formerly Sansevieria trifasciata)
🩺 Medicinal value: Used in various traditional medicine systems — in African, Asian, and Ayurvedic practice, leaf extracts have been used for coughs, sore throat, and as a topical treatment for wounds or skin conditions; the plant is also noted for its air-purifying properties (studied by NASA for removing toxins like formaldehyde and benzene from indoor air). Not used in modern conventional medicine, and ingestion is actually mildly toxic (see warning below).
🌎 Origin: Native to West Africa, particularly Nigeria and the Congo region, extending into tropical Africa and parts of Asia.
🎨 Uses: Extremely popular ornamental houseplant, valued for its stiff, upright, sword-like leaves with green banding (often edged in yellow in variegated forms). Prized for being nearly indestructible, tolerant of neglect, and reputed to purify indoor air — commonly placed in bedrooms, offices, and low-light spaces. Also historically used in West Africa to produce a strong fiber (bowstring hemp) for cordage and bowstrings.
🌡️ Plant needs: Tolerates a wide range of temperatures (60–85°F / 15–29°C) and is highly drought-tolerant, thriving in low to bright indirect light. Prefers well-draining, sandy or cactus-type soil — one of the most low-maintenance houseplants available.
💧 How to care: Water sparingly, letting soil dry out completely between waterings (overwatering is the most common cause of death via root rot). Tolerates low light but grows best with bright indirect light. Fertilize lightly a few times during the growing season, or not at all. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F (10°C). Propagates easily via leaf cuttings or rhizome division.
⚠️ Warning (children & pets): Mildly toxic if chewed or ingested — contains saponins that can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or drooling in humans, cats, and dogs. Symptoms are usually mild but keep out of reach of young children and pets, and contact a doctor or vet if a significant amount is ingested or symptoms persist.
